UN Human Rights System

An annual report of the United Nations system, that includes summaries of all documentation generated from the major human rights bodies, as well as Commission on Human Rights and Sub Commission reports, and studies from the specialized UN agencies.

Produced in partnership with the Canadian Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade, and with a contribution from the European Community, For the Record 2000: The UN Human Rights System is organized thematically as well as by country and covers all relevant UN documentation over a full calendar year. These include: State reports presented to the six Treaty Bodies and the concluding observations of the experts; reports of the Special Rapporteurs, Special Representatives and Working Groups of the Commission on Human Rights (CHR) and the Sub-Commission; all relevant resolutions and decisions of the CHR, the Sub-Commission, the Economic and Social Council, the General Assembly and the Security Council.

The thematic volume continues to grow and the 2000 edition includes: Economic, Social and Cultural Rights; Food; Fourth World Conference on Women; Globalization; Human Rights Defenders; Millennium; Right to Development; UN Development Programme; World Conference Against Racism, Racial Discrimination, Xenophobia and Related Intolerance; and World Summit for Social Development. All material is presented as objectively as possible, with no editorial comment.

Since its inception in 1997, For the Record has proven itself an invaluable resource for those working at all levels of the international human rights movement. An important reference tool for those active within the UN system, the report also aids in demystifying the human rights work of the UN for the uninitiated, members of parliament, journalists, students, teachers and the general public.

The UN Report CD-ROM was produced with financial support from the Canadian International Development Agency for distribution to human rights groups throughout the South, where access to the World Wide Web is costly.
