Since 1976, HRI has been a leader in the research and advancement of human rights. HRI's ability to increase awareness and positive action has been a result of numerous projects with international organizations and human rights leaders.
Currently, HRI communicates with over 5,000 organizations and individuals around the world working for the advancement of human rights. Some notable facts on HRI and its work include:
- HRI has Consultative Status with the United Nations (ECOSOC and UNICEF) and Observer Statues with the African Commission on Human and Peoples' Rights.
- Each year HRI recruits 30+ interns for six-month placements to areas such as Panama, Costa Rica, Hungary, India, the Philippines, South Africa, Ghana, and The Gambia
- HRI has placed hundreds of interns in partner organizations across the world
- Since 1990, HRI has collected and indexed the largest collection of human rights documents in the world
- The Microfiche Database provides information on the location, mandate, activities and publications of over 300 organizations globally
- HRI's work has been possible with financial contributions from a large variety of funders, including CIDA, Oxfam, DFAIT, CORDAID, DFID and the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs
- HRI and the Agencia Latinoamericana de Informacion (ALAI) created The Civil Society Forum of the Americas held in Quito, Ecuador which consulted with a broad variety of NGOs and social movements for the World Conference on Racism, Racial Discrimination, Xenophobia and Related Intolerance (WCAR)
- HRI initiated the Forum of Citizen's Diplomacy to establish a permanent and ongoing co-operation with the Secretariat of the United Nations as well as that of the Organization of American States thereby enhancing the potential for dialogue and negotiations between governments and civil society representatives throughout the Americas.
- HRI, in partnership with the Oslo Coalition on Freedom of Religion or Belief, maintained an electronic library dedicated to freedom of religion or belief
- HRI has acted as the secretariat for several major human rights coalitions including the Canadian Information Network for Children and Youth, The Vienna+5 International Advisory Group, the Forum for Citizen's Diplomacy, and the South / South East Asian Legal Reform and Research Working Group
- HRI created a Partner Site program which developed and maintained websites for organizations and groups with a special human rights message and providing assistance to areas of the world where the cost of creating electronic media proved prohibitive
