Frequently Asked Questions

  1. Why should I apply for an internship with HRI?

First and foremost, an HRI internship is an excellent opportunity for those interested in human rights and social justice issues to carry this commitment into the professional sphere. An HRI internship is a fantastic opportunity to gain overseas work experience while having your cost of living covered by a stipend provided by CIDA through the Government of Canada’s Youth Employment Strategy (YES).  As for many former participants, the experience and networking opportunities that internships foster become the basis for future employment.

  1. What is the procedure in terms of selection, departure and the length of the contract?

Application will be open until the positions are filled.  After a review of the applications, selected candidates will be invited for a phone interview. Successful candidates will be informed shortly after the interview about the pre-departure procedures. If you are successful you will first be matched with a placement and your application will be submitted to the host organization for their review and acceptance. Following acceptance, you will be invited to attend the pre-departure briefing. The internship contract is for seven months, six of which are spent overseas. You are expected to do some additional work assignments, including awareness-raising and public information activities before your departure and after your arrival home.  HRI will give you guidance on these activities.

  1. How much money will I be getting?

You will receive a stipend of approximately $11,500.  Please note that you will have to provide copies of the receipts of your major expenses such as flights, insurance, and rent. The money will be distributed in installments, tied with reporting requirements. $500 will be held back until you have completed your placement and your awareness-raising activities and have submitted a final report.

  1. I have tons of student loans. How can I afford to pay them AND do an internship?

For the most part, the guidance says you must pay interest on your loans for six months after you graduate, but after that you can generally apply for six months of interest relief. Since the Youth Employment Strategy (YES) is funded by the federal government, many interns with federal loans qualify for interest relief. Success with provincial loans tends to vary. Keep in mind that YOU are responsible for making all necessary arrangements with your bank but that HRI will provide any necessary supporting documentation.

  1. I’m finished my internship…What now?

Once interns return from their overseas placements, debriefing and reintegration sessions may be organized, where interns will have the opportunity to share their experiences.
