Human Rights Internet is happy to announce our internship programme for 2011! These postings are provided in conjunction with the CIDA International Youth Internship Program.

Equipo Peruano de Antropologia Forense (EPAF)

Country: Peru
Internship’s title: Training and technical support officer
Intern’s profile: Mandatory fluency in Spanish and extensive knowledge of web based programs (HTML, web design software and communication programs)
Intern Job Description: The intern will have two main duties: managing EPAF’s information needs and supporting the program in Ayacucho. The work with EPAF will involve strengthening EPAF’s capacity to produce, disseminate and use information. This includes:

  • Working alongside an information officer, to help produce regular content for a newsletter, press releases and the EPAF website;
  • Training a person who will manage the EPAF website and all IT-related activities;
  • Organizing information trainings for beneficiaries of EPAF in the field;
  • Proposal writing and fundraising.

The intern will also help EPAF build a network in Peru, and internationally, and work with HRI and AP to organize outreach activities in North America (including possibly a speaking tour to Canada by EPAF’s Executive director).


Jagaran Media Center (JMC)

Country: Nepal
Internship’s title: JMC Media Officer
Intern’s profile: Preference will be given to interns with background and interest in Human Rights, Media studies/production, Journalism, Political Science, Sociology, Anthropology, Law and Democracy.
Intern Job Description: Specific activities include the following:

  • Organizing web content
  • Editing English language documents
  • Liaising with field correspondents
  • Writing press releases

Working on campaigns to increase knowledge of caste discrimination on the part of Nepal’s Constituent Assembly


Women’s Reproductive Rights Program (WRRP) under the aegis Centre for Agro-Ecology and Development (CAED)

Country: Nepal
Internship’s title: Women’s Reproductive Rights Program Officer
Intern’s profile: Prefer public health background or development studies. Able to work in harsh condition. Knowledge on multi-media preparation. Proficiency in both spoken and written English is crucial
Intern Job Description: Intern’s activities include the following:

  • Design preventative program on the issue of uterine prolapse.
  • National and International campaign and advocacy of the issue
  • Documentation and dissemination of experiences and learning

The School of Public Health (SOPH), University of the Western Cape

Country: South Africa
Internship’s title: [1] Training Assistant
Intern’s profile: We would be looking for someone that has:

  • An interest in public health, particularly in a community-based and participatory approach to health care;
  • An interest in supporting health and development initiatives in Africa;
  • An ability to work independently, and be proactive and flexible in the workplace;
  • Skills in being able to access information, academic literature and training materials (and establish a good referencing system for these articles);
  • Skills in being able to write project and/or academic reports in a clear, logical and comprehensive manner;
  • Computer skills - specifically: WORD, Power Point, email, web-based searching (and EXCEL would be an advantage)

Intern Job Description: The Intern will:

  • Visiting PURE study sites where recruitment of study participants is being undertaken and rendering logistical/organisational assistance to the recruitment process.
  • Collecting, Coding, Entering and Cleaning baseline data from PURE study participants (Both using a customized online database and on SPSS).
  • Managing a database of study participants in the PURE study.
  • Drawing up of Excel Pivot tables, summary graphs and charts and simple descriptive error check estimates on key indicators for the PURE study.
  • Maintaining an Administrative Spreadsheet of activities in the baseline and follow-up recruitment the PURE study.

These activities will mainly be performed in the urban site (Cape Town) but there may be an opportunity for visiting the rural site.


Internship’s title: [2] SOPH Research Assistant
Intern’s profile: We would be looking for someone that has:

Intern Job Description: The Intern will:

  • Assist in sourcing and accessing relevant academic literature, publications, case studies and teaching resources on health, development and primary health care that would be used in the updating of our MPH module on primary health care;
  • Assist the Researcher (Ms Nikki Schaay) and the Principal Investigator (Prof David Sanders) in writing up aspects of the Teasdale-Corti CPHC project activities (such as progress reports or policy briefs derived from the project’s literature review and study results);
  • Assist in preparing power-point presentations and documents that will be used in the dissemination about the results of the country-based research projects;
  • Assist Prof Sanders with specific research projects. For example, one that requires a research assistant at present involves investigating the percentage of provincial and national health funding that goes to health managers (at the level of Deputy Director and above) vs. that which goes to health workers at a primary level of care (such as doctors and nurses) - over the last ten years.

Intern’s profile: We would be looking for someone that has:

  • An interest in public health, particularly in a community-based and participatory approach to health care;
  • An interest in supporting health and development initiatives in Africa;
  • An ability to work independently, and be proactive and flexible in the workplace;
  • Skills in being able to access information, academic literature and training materials (and establish a good referencing system for these articles);
  • Skills in being able to write project and/or academic reports in a clear, logical and comprehensive manner;
  • Computer skills - specifically: WORD, Power Point, email, web-based searching (and EXCEL would be an advantage)
  • Some training and/or experience in qualitative research methods and or SPSS/STATA training will be an advantage

Intern Job Description: The Intern will:

  • To assist with management and analysis of quantitative data using SPSS.
  • To help with sourcing relevant scientific and grey literature on various research topics we are currently working on (e.g. Global health Initiatives, health systems, health policy analysis, HIV/AIDS, TB etc).
  • To assist with literature reviews of the papers/manuscripts we are working on.
  • To assist with management and analysis of qualitative data using atlas software (we will provide training for that).

Health Systems Trust (HST)

Country: South Africa
Internship’s title: South African Health Review (SAHR) Officer
Intern’s profile: Experience and knowledge of Public Health, good writing and organizational skills. The intern must be an energetic team player who would be willing to take on a variety of tasks and someone who is flexible and willing to expose themselves to new learning opportunities.
Intern Job Description: Although the duties and responsibilities of the intern will be jointly negotiated upon arrival, the following is likely:

  • Providing support to the editor of the SAHR - assisting in writing briefs, contacting authors, compiling database of authors, peer reviewers, sending manuscripts to peer reviewers and back to authors, basic editing, checking references, providing input in terms of layout and design of the SAHR, indexing and glossary compilation assisting in launch and media liaison.
  • Information Dissemination: distribution of materials, writing of reports in plain languages for lay audiences, working with the media to introduce new publications, assisting in writing press statements, assisting in conducting user surveys and internal dissemination of events and publications to the organisation.
  • She/he will also assist in the compilation of the HST Bulletin which is a bi-weekly electronic newsletter which has a membership of around 1800 people. The Bulletin provides succinct, up to date information on developments, events and resources in the public health arena.
  • The intern will also be given an opportunity to contribute to an academic article if she/he so wishes.

Parliamentary Monitoring Group

Country: South Africa
Internship’s title: Monitoring and reporting officer
Intern’s profile: The intern must have excellent written and oral skills. Preference will be given to interns whose home language/mother tongue is English as the presentation of information on the website has to be extremely accurate. The intern must possess advanced computer skills and excellent Drupal expertise in particular. The intern must be efficient, diligent and have good communication skills.
Intern Job Description: The intern will attend meetings of South Africa’s parliamentary committees and provide detailed reports of the proceedings. PMG tries to accommodate the expertise of the interns when monitoring a government portfolio. The intern will cover two meetings per week and his/her reports will be published on the PMG website.
The intern must be able to combine his monitoring duties with other tasks. These include one or more of the following:

  • Updating the PMG website
  • Making design changes to the PMG website
  • Adding modules to our Drupal website
  • Providing IT support
  • Providing a critical, unbiased eye
  • Helping to improve the organization’ s systems

Children Legal Action Network (CLAN)

Country: Kenya
Internship’s title: Training and Technical Support Officer
Intern’s profile: It is essential that the intern has a good oral and written command of the English language. Preference will be given to interns with a background in Information Technology.
Intern Job Description: The intern will assist the staff members on how to use the internet for the purposes of research, as well as help design and implement databases for case management at the office and other centres around the country. He/she will also train the staff on: the proper use of the internet and web programs; technical support in general; the development of soft ware and its use; maintaining databases; and, networking the office computer equipment. Additionally, the intern will provide advice on the proper use of the computers and the right specifications of computer equipment to be used, publication layout and communication materials.


National Council for Civic Education

Country: The Gambia
Internship’s title: Good Governance Program Officer
Intern’s profile: Proficiency in both spoken and written English is crucial. Preference will be given to interns with a social science background such as anthropology, cultural studies, political science, social work, sociology and education.
Intern Job Description: The intern will:

  • Support the Programmes Unit and staff in conceiving and developing relevant good governance related program activities suitable for citizens’ education;
  • Assist in conducting in house training (inductions) for programme staff in understanding the principles and concepts of Constitutional Democracy, good governance, patriotism and good citizenship.
  • Assist in developing suitable and well outlined project proposals

Iniciativa de Mujeres por la Paz- IMP (Alliance Initiative of Colombian Women for Peace)

Country: Colombia
Internship’s title: [1] International Aid officer
Intern’s profile: Proficiency in both written and spoken Spanish is crucial.
Have the ability to translate document in both languages.
Preference will be given to interns with a background in social science (political sciences, anthropology, communication, sociology, etc.)
Intern Job Description: The intern will help to design a strategy for international cooperation and aid, and will work to create a database of international collaborators. This work is necessary in order to create alliances and networks with which to design and implement programs, projects and activities supporting women’s rights and women’s leadership in political processes in Colombia.

Intern Job Description: The intern will assist IMP in the process of planning, implementing, monitoring and evaluating projects supported by the organization related to the promotion and defense of women’s rights and women’s leadership in political processes in Colombia. Focus will be on the situation of women within the armed conflict and the possibilities to strengthen their participation and capacity to contribute to a reconciliation process in the country.


International Center for Transitional Justice (ICTJ)

Country: Colombia
Internship’s title: Colombian Public Policy Analyst - Colombia Program
Intern’s profile: Intern must be fluent in written and spoken Spanish, as well as have writing skills in both English and Spanish. Ideally, interns should be trained on legal issues, human rights, and / or social sciences. Specific knowledge on issues of transitional justice is an asset.
Interns should have commitment to the work that the organization develops, high standards of quality, openness to teamwork, and willingness to work in environments in process of structuring.
Intern Job Description: The internship will contribute to the work and mandate of the ICTJ, Colombia Program, by: gathering important information on transitional justice and the Colombian case; preparing papers in English and Spanish on that topic; attending conferences / events as a representative of the ICTJ and preparing abstracts about the events; and supporting the development of other activities that will strengthen the capacity of the office in Colombia to carry out their four lines of action which are: knowledge production, specialized technical assistance, training and education, and communication and dissemination of information regarding transitional justice.
